The more time I spend with Managed Service Providers offering Backup and Disaster Recovery with a backdrop of Cyber Resilience or Data Resilience, the more differentiated some MSPs’ solutions are across the BaaS > DRaaS > CRaaS spectrum.

If you’re thinking about data or cyber resilience then of course you’re going to get your data out of the building but for most organizations that should just be the beginning of the story.
You can get our data out to a secondary data center … with some tapes … but most folks are going to put it in a cloud. But if you’re still the one managing that cloud then watch this video on why Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are likely the determinant between your data or cyber recovery being successful … or not.
Backup (as a service) is about ensuring previous versions of your data are survivable. Managed backups will offload oversight and maintenance of the backup solution components, maybe give you white-glove or turnkey backups and restores, but will ensure that the backups are successful.
Disaster Recovery (as a service) is about scale and orchestration – usually to alternative infrastructure. This is also where we should see recurring well-documented testing and an alignment between IT and the business to understand prioritization.
Cyber Resilience (as a service) builds on DRaaS, but since cyber attacks are more complex than natural disasters, more has to be done before and during the remediation. You’re going to need additional technologies integrated into the workflows and you’re going need need a much broader range of skills from negotiation through recovery from a variety of teams. In 2026, the most definitive differentiator will be your clean-room methodologies to ensure your recoveries.
To be fair, your MSP may not use the same terms – and this isn’t necessarily a complete “Good, Better, Best” maturation … BUT, if you are looking for cyber resilience, then these are some of the attributes that you need to be seeking out – whether you are doing them internally, using multiple providers, or a single managed solution.
