The fate of your organization rests in the hands of your technical ‘first responders’ for Cyber Resilience and Disaster Recovery. Do they all know the plan?

video transcript

In honor of my son who is onboarding for his first EMT role today, here’s a quote from his EMT courseware:

The fate of the wounded rests in the hands of the one who applies the first dressing.

I totally get how this applies to EMTs and — as a scout leader who has taken wilderness first aid more times than I can count, it applies to 1st responders in general. But for my technology friends and to resilience leaders out there, this applies to us too.

Consider this a DPM and Two Minute Monday crossover.

The fate of the wounded rests in the hands of the one who applies the first dressing

Or in our case, when we talk about cyber breaches or natural disasters, let’s talk about — how our technology first responders respond in the moment when the injury, the outage, the breach, the ransom is first discovered … truly can make all the difference.

The difference between having a resilience PLAN and having a resilience CULTURE is:

  • With a resilience plan, only the folks who wrote it and 1° of separation know what’s in it.
  • In a resilience culture, because planning, preparation, and testing are all part of the foundation, everybody knows what to do – which means that first responder is working off of the same playbook as the expert who wrote it because:

The fate of the wounded (your organization) rests in the hands of the ones who respond first.

See you next Monday
