If you’re already reading the 21 Laws of Leadership, then I hope you’ve enjoyed the first few. If you haven’t yet, then I’ll remind you that one of the best parts of these laws is that each stands on its own — which means it’s never a bad time to join a book club, starting with where we are.
For our second meeting, we’ll be discussing laws 3 and 4.
Law #3 is the Law of Process … where the author explains that “Leadership develops daily, not in a day”.
The lesson starts with the example of compound interest, where the earlier you start, even if you’re only making tiny contributions, balloons over time. It’s true for savings accounts and it’s true for leadership development. In fact, the advice continues that if you look at what a person does day after day, then you’ll know who that person is and what they are becoming. John combines that with recognizing that leaders are continual learners; so I hope you’ll take those ideas and put them together as we try to grow each other through the club.
Law #4 is the Law of Navigation … under the mantra that “Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course.”
The author offers several examples of seeing the bigger picture and seeing further out, including the importance of preparation. The lesson continues by teaching about the balance between optimistic faith that you can lead your people to the right outcome and the realistic willingness to recognize obstacles and adjust mid-course.
So, we’re only 4 of 21 laws into the club, so I hope you’ll join us for our second meeting. If you haven’t yet, check out CoachableMinutes.com/BookClub.
