An EMT is taught “You’re not studying to pass the exam, but to stand in the way of death“
… there’s a lesson in here for those that do Cyber Resilience, Data Resilience, or Disaster Recovery.
video transcript:
I was talking with someone who is currently studying to be an EMT paramedic. At their school each day, the instructor starts with a daily motto. Day One’s was:
You aren’t studying to pass the exam; you’re studying because you will be what stands between someone and their death.
That’s pretty heavy … and at the risk of being melodramatic, let’s talk about IT disaster recovery and cyber resilience.
You aren’t preparing and testing to pass an audit; you’re preparing and testing because your team and procedures are what’s standing between a fire/flood/ransom and the organization going out of business.
If that last part sounds over the top, then maybe you just:
- Lose millions of dollars
- Which reduces budgets in other areas
- Which can result in lost jobs … maybe yours, maybe that entry level employee who just had a baby … maybe that colleague who was looking to retire in a few years.
There are all kinds of downstream effects beyond just ‘downtime’ and ‘data loss’.
And what stands in the way of all those ramifications is whatever you and your teams do now to prepare and test. No, we aren’t in the medical first responder business – and most of us couldn’t do those jobs.
But if you are in BC/DR … remember, you aren’t looking to pass an audit, you preparing to save the company.
