This is showing up more in social media, but I started thinking about it as part of Newtonian Physics – and the Law of Inertia.
Are you an object at rest or in motion?

Whatever you are not changing … you are choosing. I wish I could take credit for this one but I’ve seen a couple different folks using it in social media lately so I wanted to pile on.
Think about those words:
Whatever you are not changing … meaning intentionally putting effort into affecting
You are choosing … meaning embracing that status quo
I’ve preached on something similar in the past – but I’ve used Newtonian physics and the Law of Inertia, which says “an object in motion – will stay in motion – until a force is applied”
Imagine you’re floating in space, and you shot a bullet. Without gravity or the pressure or friction of air, that bullet would fly in a straight line basically forever … until the gravity of planet/star is felt, or it hits some debris
The law of inertia works the other way too – “an object at rest will stay at rest until a force is applied”.
For this example, let’s look at physical fitness. I’m a little heavier than I used to be … but:
- If I am not changing my lifestyle … like more exercise
- or changing my diet … like reducing desserts
- then I am choosing to remain overweight
That law of inertia kicked in on Saturday as I was thinking about this podcast while lying in bed. Because at that moment, my wife said “Hey your son and I are going to go take a morning walk, do you want to come.” While I was happy being an object at rest, a force was applied, and I was now in motion.
So, ask yourself about YOUR current circumstances. Maybe something physical … or fiscal … or personal … or professional … or whatever you are “less than satisfied with” And then, remind yourself:
Whatever you are not changing … you are choosing
See you next Monday
