Lately I’ve been watching folks taking on some heavy personal responsibilities, becoming caretakers for an elderly or other family member. They’re doing an amazing job of taking care of what needs to be done – in fact, they are taking care of everything … except sometimes themselves.
When you check in with them you hear a weariness in their voice that comes not from just physical demands but also that “always being on” emotional state – it can be overwhelming and exhausting.
If you know someone like that, check on them! We’ve talked about buddy checks recently, but in this case, presume they need a hug. Maybe it’s a physical hug … or a text of encouragement … or a meal … or flowers. If you are thinking about someone right now – and a gesture came to mind – don’t let that go, because they probably need it – whether they know it or not.
Now a word for the caretakers:
THANK YOU for taking on more than your share. Please take care of you! Before you roll your eyes, let me rephrase that so that you can reconcile it with all the responsibility that you’re carrying. Please take care of you, because otherwise you won’t be able to take care of them.
Like the airline says, put on your own mask before assisting others.
That means sometimes finding time for you, which can sound selfish. After all there are others in need so how can I possibly justify focusing on myself? Am not saying taking a vacation; but be willing to take a nap – okay?
And since you’ve heard the earlier part of this video, now you know that there are others who’ve been suggested to check on you and help try to take care of you. Please let them! Just like you’re called to take care of someone, they’re called to take care of you. So let ‘em!
In the meantime, please know that you are appreciated … that what you’re doing matters … and that this is a season that will (better or worse) someday pass, so embrace your calling and know that while you do it, you’re loved.
I hope that’s enough for this week – see ya next Monday.
